Readership: more gains than losses

Seven out of the top ten English newspapers have registered a growth in readership over the year 2011 with the exception of the Mumbai Mirror. Five out of ten Hindi newspapers have shown a steady increase over the year.

Seven out of the top ten English newspapers have registered a growth in readership over the year 2011 with the exception of the Mumbai Mirror.The Times of India and Hindustan Times are still the 1st and 2nd most widely read newspapers with an Average Issue Readership of 74.67 lakh and 37.33 lakh respectively, according to the IRS Q3 2011 results, though they lost 4,000 readers each in the last quarter. The Mumbai Mirror has declined from 7.8 lakh readers in the 1st quarter to 7.6 lakh in the third quarter.
 
Other English dailies such as The Hindu, The Telegraph, The New Indian Express, The Tribune, DNA, The Economic Times, Deccan Chronicle and Mumbai Mirror all registered growth. The highest growth has been registered by The Hindu among top English dailies, adding 92,000 readers with an AIR of 21.69 lakh in the third quarter.

Five out of ten Hindi newspapers have shown a steady increase over the year.Dainik Jagran and Dainik Bhaskar continue to lead the Hindi dailies by occupying the 1st and 2nd positions respectively.
 
Hindustan lost one lakh readers compared to the last quarte, and ranks third. The highest growth that was registered among the Hindi dailies is that of Patrika (IRS Q1 2011-12.51 lakh and IRS Q2 2011-14.3 lakh) with 14.31% increase in Q3 as compared to the previous quarter. The newspaper did not figure in the top 10 list of Hindi dailies in the first quarter. But other dailies like Amar Ujala, Rajasthan Patrika, Punjab Kesari, Navbharat Times and Nai Dunia have seen a drop in their Average Issue Readerships in the Q3 results.
 
 
Jagran has topped the list of publications with an AIR of 164.58 lakhs, while Bhaskar  is at 148.79 lakhs per IRS Q3 2011 results. Regional publications like the Malayala Manorama continues to lead while Tamil paper Daily Thanthi registered a growth in their AIR 74.47 lakhs which has seen an addition of 1,57,000 readers in this quarter. Journalists in Kashmir are up in arms over the summons issued by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to Kashmir Observer journalist Aqib Javed Hakim, for his interview with jailed separatist leader Asiya Andrabi in January. This amounted to intimidation and harassment, a joint statement of the Kashmir Working Journalist Association (KWJA) and Kashmir Journalist Association said, adding that, in the Kamran Yousuf case, the NIA had tried to define journalism by its own skewed standards.                           

D Sunitha, an ASP in the Telangana Police, filed complaints with the NBSA against character assassination by some Telugu TV channels. NBSA has announced an agreement  arrived at with HMTV whereby the channel will broadcast an agreed upon apology statement three times a day on three days starting today.The complaint was against ETV, Sakshi and HMTV, the NBSA has reserved its order in other two cases. TV9 was as much of an offender, but it is not a member if the NBSA.
